Legend has it that, in ancient times, a wife had to place a braid of her hair inside the grave of her deceased
husband. The hair was then replaced by a loaf of braided bread–Zopf. Today, across Switzerland, there is no
Sunday breakfast without a loaf of buttery, unsweetened Zopf on the table, and without a discussion about
whether the egg should be kneaded into the dough or simply brushed on top.
