Big Pink Marble Cactus
2021, pink Portuguese marble
An environmental sculpture by
Swiss artist Claudia Comte
Raised among the forests of the Swiss countryside, Claudia Comte has long
drawn inspiration from the organic forms and underlying symmetries of
nature. Fascinated by the ways organisms communicate, adapt and survive, she
has made cacti and corals recurring subjects in her work, resilient life forms
shaped by extreme conditions. The cactus, in particular, has become a poetic
metaphor for survival in a destabilised world, evoking arid landscapes and a
possible future Earth marked by desertification. Installed for a period outside
the artist’s studio in Bennwil, Switzerland, Big Pink Marble Cactus appeared
as an alien presence displaced from its natural habitat. This surreal visitor
created a striking contrast, prompting viewers to reconsider familiar notions
of place, climate, and belonging. Surrounded by lush greenery in summer and
snow in winter, the marble cactus became a quiet reminder of ecological shifts
already underway, and of the projections we cast onto the landscape. A gentle
disruption intended to awaken curiosity, as compelling art often does, the work
opens spaces for empathy, wonder, and critical thought, qualities essential to
imagining different futures together. ●
